What is CBD Oil?

CBD  is a shortener from Cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound extracted from the hemp plant. It is one of around 85 unique compounds found in hemp plant, known as cannabinoids.

Cannabinoids in our body are either external and consumed called; (phytocannabinoids) or internal and produced naturally by the body (endocannabinoid). Both of there chemicals that interact with the body’s central regulatory system which has some control managing body homeostasis and affect appetite, mood and sleep.

CBD is an example of a phytocannabinoid and considered as external intake. Our bodies are able to naturally produce some endocannabinoids  (internal) that bind to cannabinoid receptors in both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, phytocannabinoids still can help to kickstart our central regulatory system. CBD has many benefits related to sleep, appetite, pain relief, and mood but it is not considered as psychoactive compound like THC, which another compound found in Marijuana plant, but not found in a Hemp plant. CBD is found in both plants.

CBD Oil then is made by extracting CBD from the hemp plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like hemp seed oil or coconut oil for the purpose of storing and consumption.

Where does CBD Oil come from?

CBD is extracted from specific varieties of cannabis. It is the second most abundant compound in cannabis, typically representing 5-30% of its extracts but sometimes even up to 40%.

Legal CBD products that you find on the market will typically be extracts from the hemp plant, as federal law in the United States and in many other countries allows for the cultivation, processing, and marketing of hemp and hemp made products.

How does CBD Oil work?

The human body creates its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids. These are produced to support our regulatory system. These endocannabinoids help our body and nervous system to balance day to day functions including appetite, immune system functions, pain, sensation, mood, memory, and inflammation control.

Similar to vitamin C in our body to kick start our immune system, CBD kick starts these cannabinoids to the receptors working at optimal capacity and to help body’s central regulatory system to function.

Do you get high from CBD oil?

CBD does not get you high! It is most often mixed up with THC, which is another cannabinoid found in cannabis but not from hemp plant. Thus, it is crucial to point the difference in them as CBD and THC have fundamentally different properties and benefits when used.

THC from marijuana is intoxicating and except medical use, an illegal substance in most states and part of the world. THC also is responsible for causing marijuana users to get “high”.  Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive because it does not act on the same parts of the brain or with similar chemical neurological pathways as THC. Thus, it is practically impossible to get “high” by smoking or ingesting CBD or CBD oil products from hemp plants, because they only have minuscule traces of THC (<0.3%).

Why CBD Oil?

“Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.

Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention.”

– ‘Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants’ (Patent # 6,630,507) held by the United States Department of Health and Human Services

What is the different between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil?

The difference between hemp oil and CBD Oil is important to know as their use is completely different.  CBD oil is cannabis oil that has a significant content of cannabidiol particularly. CBD Oil is made from the flowers, leaves and stalks of hemp as they are known to have higher CBD levels whereas hemp oil is made from the seeds.

In many cases, people get confused by these two and even the company who is selling may mislead in their marketing, intentionally or not, Anyway, there is a significant difference between hemp oil and CBD.  They both do come from the same plant, contain components of healthful properties but they are greatly different in their reason of use.

Confusing regulations and product labeling from various companies are not helping that.  A company might describe products as medicinal when their effects haven’t actually been proven and so on.

So let’s cut to the chase; what is the Key Difference between hemp oil and CBD Oil?

Well first of all hemp oil is great for cooking and typically full of nutrients. Like olive oil but even better. It provides a crispy and maybe a little nutty taste to foods. It is also a good substitute for olive oil for example in salads or when frying a steak. For your skin, hemp oil can be used to moisturize it after a shower. Hemp Oil is used in paints that are eco-friendly, as a bio-diesel fuel, skin lotions and soups for personal hygiene and etc.

Respectively, CBD oil has become popular in the medical side of the cannabis industry. That is due to CBD ability to help with various symptoms in different treatments without the typical intoxicating effects of cannabis use. For example, CBD oil is highly used in the treatment of anxiety, depression, but also in inflammatory disorders,  seizures and neurodegenerative disorders. Even epilepsy can be treated with CBD products at least some level.

The key difference is what these oils contain in a matter of CBD levels. CBD oil typically has up to 15% CBD in it, whereas hemp oil contains the only fraction of that level of CBD – typically less than 25 parts per million. Some companies may take advantage of the unaware consumer when selling them hemp oil with CBD Oil’s health benefits.

To conclude all this CBD oil is for health-related treatments and relaxation and hemp oil is for cooking and manufacturing other oils or plastics.

Where CBD Oil products are legal?

2018 Farm Bill, hemp and hemp-derived products have been officially removed from the purview of the Controlled Substances Act, That means that as far as CBD is extracted from industrial hemp and completely pure (without any THC, practically mean less than 0,3% THC) and grown by licensed farmers in accordance with state and federal regulations, it is legal as a hemp product and legal to produce and sell CBD products in all 50 states. In

Europe and the rest of the world legislation might vary by country but at most parts of the world, CBD products without THC are considered legal.
